slowdown due to “cut-off”
In yesterday’s blog, the trough’s drainage (also called “cut-off”) was already! described. This process not only resulted in the weakening! of the cold front, but also had a braking effect on this system. The reason for this is the resulting closed! circulation! which slows the system down as it moves further! eastward and counteracts the original upper-level flow.

However, the effective sunshine in this strip of drier air was less than one might have thought. The soil moisture from yesterday’s precipitation quickly expressed itself in the morning as shallow cumulus clouds with the sunlight, even before the cloud fields of the occluding front appeared from the west. In the afternoon, the first local showers appeared on the radar from the Jura, but some of them did not even reach the ground.
