A cold front, embd in a weak to moderate southwesterly upper air flow, slowly cross Switzerland today. Yesterday evening and overnight into today, thunderstorms with some heavy rainfall were trigger on its front side. This was particularly the case in the western half of the country.

Yesterday evening and overnight into today, heavy thunderstorms fell in the western half of the country and in the Alps. The intensity of the precipitation was sometimes very high. The following maximum values were measur in MeteoSwiss’ automatic measuring network:

Why did it remain dry in some parts of Eastern Switzerland?

Already at the breakfast table, today’s blog author had to justify why the garden was still bone dry. Shortly after getting up, the reason for this was of course still unclear to him.

As is usual with incorrect forecasts, we went to the weather qatar phone number library center to look for the cause. We found what we were looking for by looking at the latest high-altitude weather maps.

3-hourly animat altitude weather map at 500 hPa (approx. 5700 m) from Friday, June 30, 2023, 00 UTC to Saturday, July 1, 2023, 12 UTC from the European forecast model. Shown are the temperature (color areas) and the geopotential (black lines)

The animation above shows how a narrow trough (a “U-shap structure”) is approaching Switzerland. Just west of Switzerland, the southern part of the trough begins to drain. On the one hand, this process means that the cold front hardly moves eastwards any more; on the other hand, an independent low pressure system forms over the Gulf of Genoa. To the north of this (i.e. directly over Switzerland), the embd disturbance is torn apart, which significantly weakens its precipitation activity.

The describ separation process occurr about 100 to 200 kilometers

further west than originally prict. Therefore, the main precipitation activity was concentrat on the western half of the country. Nevertheless, some diurnal rain showers occurr over eastern Switzerland during best practices for managing email campaigns the course of Friday.

The dispersion of the disturbance during the drop from the low agb directory pressure system can also be seen nicely in the animation of the European satellite and radar composite:

Temporary Precipitation Balance
Nevertheless, we would like to conclude by taking stock of the precipitation across Switzerland. The total precipitation over the past 24 hours, combin with radar data and ground measurements, shows the following:

The Lower Aare Valley – the Swiss Valley of Death….:D At least one mm was enough to fill the rain barrel at our apartment building. I still have to water my cacti or they’ll fall off the meat.
