we report on the impending development of a storm cyclone over northwestern Europe. The low pressure system call POLY form yesterday Tuesday in the area of the English Channel and mov northeast towards the North Sea. A strong development began last night at the exit of the English Channel. The air pressure in the core of the low pressure system fell rapidly by 15 hPa to 990 hPa, so that the low pressure system and with it the winds became stronger. On Wnesday morning, the low pressure system POLY and its storm wind field were locat directly off the Dutch North Sea coast.

Gusts of 148 km/h were measur in Ijmuiden on the coast, and 119 km/h were measur at Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport. The Dutch weather service KNMI had a storm warning in place.

In the afternoon, the storm POLY reach the German Bight and caus gusts of 90 to 100 km/h. POLY will now move on to Denmark until this evening, where it will gradually fill up and weaken.

waves on the North Sea
The storm winds creat waves of 3 to 4 meters in the North Sea off the Dutch coast. Due to the relatively short duration of the storm winds and the short distance over sea, the waves could not grow higher.

Was it a Sting jet?
The relative position of the storm field behind the cold front immiately south of the low pressure center is striking. This is typical for rapidly developing storm depressions such as POLY and is reminiscent of a so-call sting jet. Put simply, a sting jet is creat when cold and dry air descends from the upper and middle layers. In POLY there are at least signs of a sting jet, change android home screen wallpaper although the high-altitude air probably did not reach all the way to the earth’s surface. According to backward trajectory calculations (not shown here), the air that hit the Dutch coast had an initial height of around 2000 meters. Additional analyses would therefore still be necessary.
